Over the past few months, the TEA Proposal team collaborated with Dr. Melville Wohlgemuth--a researcher and an assistant professor at the University of Arizona-- to create an internship position for a high school student who is interested in learning more about the neuroscience behind the sensory integration of stimuli and behaviors associated with long-term goal planning. Here, we would like to summarize the intern selection process and describe the role that the TEA team played in finding a high school student for this position:

6/28/2021: The TEA Proposal team reached out to Dr. Wohlgemuth and asked him for potential research opportunities for high school students.

6/29/2021-7/11/2021: Email communication between The TEA Proposal and Dr. Wohlgemuth.

7/12/2021: Meeting between The TEA Proposal team and Dr. Wohlgemuth.

During this meeting, Dr. Wohlgemuth and our team decided to work together in creating an internship position. While Dr. Wohlgemuth offered his research mentorship, our team agreed to find highly motivated high school students who are interested in participating in this research opportunity.

7/17/2021 - 7/30/21: The TEA Proposal shared the research opportunity with the public on social media and opened the application for the two-week period. By 7/30/21, we received all applications.

8/1/2021 - 8/14/2021: The TEA Proposal team conducted interviews with these students to gauge their research interests and their potential fit to the lab.

8/16/2021: The TEA Proposal forwarded information of all three applicants to Dr. Wohlgemuth. This information included their full resume, a summary of their interest statements, and a summary of their responses to interview questions.

8/17/2021 - 9/12/2021: Email communication between The TEA Proposal, Dr. Wohlgemuth, and the applicants.

9/13/2021 - 9/19/2021: Dr. Wohlgemuth conducted a second series of interviews with the applicants to learn more about them and determine which student would be the best fit to his Batlab.

9/23/2021: Dr. Wohlgemuth made a decision on the student that would be most suitable for interning in his lab!

10/25/2021: Start of internship!!

Lastly, we would like to give a huge thank you to Dr. Wohlgemuth for offering to mentor a high school student and allow them to witness and participate in the amazing research that the Batlab is performing!
